4. Katajanokka Hotel, Finland
Built as a prison in 1749, the Finish hotel still has a distinctly jail-like feel with thick brick and heavy metal bars on some of its doors. The Katajanokka Hotel is now owned by Best Western — 21st century at its finest.
5. Langholmen, Sweden
Located on the island of Langholmen, the prison housed female convicts throughout the 1800’s. With more than 500 cells, Langholmen was one of Sweden’s main prisons.
6. Liberty Boston Hotel, Massachusetts
Opening its doors in 1851 as the Charles Street Jail, the prison was closed in 1990 due to severely unfit conditions. Beautifully decorated, the atmosphere captures a modern feel without abandoning the prisons roots.
