This marks one of dozens of scandals that has plagued one of the most widely known fast food restaurant chains in the world, and it was all over a cup of coffee that proved too hot to handle. In 1992, a woman in Albuquerque spilled coffee on her lap, which resulted in third-degree burns and subsequently skin graft surgery.
She sued the corporation accusing McDonald’s of telling it’s stores to serve beverages at dangerous temperatures. She initially won
$2.9 million, but the fee was later reduced to $640,000, but not before gaining national attention.
